Personal Elite Training (PET) Program

Commencing in May 16, 2012, the Phoenix Soccer Club (PSC) wishes to extend an invitation to you to participate in the newly formulated PET Program. A concentrated player-instructor ratio facilitates a personalized approach to the fitness and technical components of the training plan in order to maximize the training outcomes of individual participants.

Fitness Training:

The fitness development component focuses on increasing speed, coordination, agility, footwork, mobility, flexibility, strength, and power.

Technical Skills Training:

The exciting new structure of the PSC provides our club with a world-class Technical Staff headed by General Manager, Kenny Brannigan, and Club Head Coach, Keith Webb.

Kenny Brannigan

– Kenny has been “in the game” over 30 years and played in over 1000 games in the professional ranks as a dominating and powerful central defender that worked equally as hard off the field coaching and developing youth players as on the field where his enthusiasm and determination inspired younger players. His leadership attributes produced spells for him at 14 pro clubs spanning 21 years and he played with clubs in both the Scottish and English Leagues. Kenny maintains a great number of coaching credentials, which include UEFA Advanced License Holder, UEFA Basic License Holder, SFA Managers Course, HND Health & Fitness, Anatomy & Phsyiology, SFA Goalkeeping Course and the SFA Early Touches Course.

For the past few years Keith has been the Northern Ireland U’17 Coach working with West Bromwich Albion as part of their Scouting Network. Parallel with these responsibilities Keith has been enlisted by the English Football Association as a Coach Educator to deliver UEFA B courses around the country. Keith holds several credentials such as; UEFA ‘A’ Licence, FA Diploma in Coach Education, FA Full License, FA preliminary Badge, FA Treatment of Inj.Dip., FA Coach. Past experience includes; Manager of Kings Lynn Football Club, Reserve Team Manager for Norwich City, Assistant Academy Director for Norwich City, Youth Team Manager for Norwich City…to name a few.

Rocky Moudgill

- is the Club Assistant Head Coach of the PSC, and has come to our club leaving his position as the very successful Technical Director and Club Head Coach of the Portage Trail Soccer Club. His time at Portage Trail resulted in increased development through their academies and results. Rocky is also the former Executive Director of WYSA, where he led many of the important development initiatives that have changed the face of youth soccer in Manitoba. Rocky’s development in soccer was fostered in his time playing and training in Greece, throughout Eastern Europe, and Asia. On the local scene, Rocky served as a player/coach with the Winnipeg Alliance.

Wade Gibson

– possesses his National B coaching certification and provides the technical staff with a vast deal of local experience, having been entrenched within the club from its very outset, and has been coaching in the Winnipeg soccer community for over the last 15 years..

The Board of Directors for PSC is proud to announce the hiring of new Club General Manager, Kenny Brannigan. Kenny brings over 30 years of experience and passion in the game as a player, Assistant Manager and Manager. In over 642 games in the professional ranks Kenny has been described as a dominating and powerful central defender that worked equally as hard off the field coaching and developing youth players as on the field where his enthusiasm and determination inspired younger players. His leadership attributes produced spells for him at 14 pro clubs spanning 21 years and he played with clubs in both the Scottish and English Leagues. As a youth he played for the oldest club in the UK – Queens Park, followed by spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Stockport County, Doncaster Rovers, Kilmarnock, Falkirk, East Stirling, Stranraer, Stenhousemuir, Clydebank, Partick Thistle, Berwick, Stirling Albion and Airdirie.

In 2008, with Kenny’s contribution, the Queen of the South club qualified for Europe competing in the UEFA cup against Nordsjaelland FC of Denmark. The Scottish and UEFA Cup campaigns raised in excess of £1million pounds for Queen of the South. In March 2010 Kenny was promoted to the role of First Team Manager finishing 4th in the Scottish First Division, the highest league position ever attained by a Manager at the Club. Working with limited finances, Kenny further kick-started Queen of the South’s Youth Initiative. He developed funding to the value of £25,000 per annum to support the growth and development of Youth Football at the Club.

Through maintaining his networking and contacts within the game Kenny has been a Guest Coach at many clubs in Europe, being exposed to the set up and secrets that produced Lionel Messi, Argentina and Barcelona. Recently, he undertook at Celtic Park a youth development workshop with AC Milan, Celtic, Barcelona and both Manchester clubs. With his knowledge and abilities to recognize talent and provide assessment reports he has assisted many Clubs in planning their game strategies throughout the Scottish League

Kenny has been a powerful advocate for young players with abilities being recognized and provided with the opportunity to attend US Colleges and Universities on Soccer Scholarships. This UK Pro Youth Soccer program has assisted many thousands of youth players aiming to fulfill their potential. His interest in youth development and support is well documented and this enthusiasm, experience and involvement will bring dividends to the youth players within Phoenix Soccer Club.

Please join us in welcoming Kenny to the PSC family, and to Winnipeg!

Good sportsmanship is when players, coaches, parents and officials treat each other with respect. Our children learn the basics of sportsmanship from the adults in their lives, especially the coaches and parents. Children who see adults behaving in a sportsmanlike manner gradually come to understand that the real winners in sports are those who know how to persevere and to behave with dignity — whether the game is won or not.

Mission Statement
To provide quality soccer programs for youth players of all ages in order for them to reach and fulfil their full potential.

• Player first
• Player specific
• Always striving for success

How to become a Phoenix Player
All players wishing to play with the Phoenix Soccer Club must first register and then attend tryouts with their respective age group.

There are 2 playing seasons for Phoenix players.

Spring/Summer (Outdoor) Registrations are in February for the outdoor season followed immediately by the tryouts. The season runs from April through to the end of September.

Fall/Winter (Indoor)
Registrations are in September followed by tryouts. The season runs from October to March the following year.

Typical training and playing year
Normally during the outdoor season there is a game and two practices per week; this is dependent on weather conditions so it is important to check with your coach beforehand. Indoors there is one game and a minimum of one practice per week.

Registration
Player Registrations are done online and can be found on the Phoenix website Dates and times are posted on the Phoenix website. Early registration enables the coaches to hold evaluations before the season starts.

Registration Fees
Registration fees are set annually and are based on league fees and club expenditures at that time. The registration fee covers all affiliation fees, administration costs, field marking and maintenance, insurance, league games, referee fees, coaches’ development costs and training fees. Also included are one pair of shorts and socks and two game shirts (one of which you keep at the end of the indoor season). This fee does not cover tournaments or other activities. Funding is available to qualifying families.

Refunds
Phoenix has a 7 day full refund policy
Players not selected to play on a Phoenix team will receive a full refund and are allowed to return to their community club with no penalty (late fee)

Tryouts, team formation and player placement
It is important that players take part in tryouts especially at the younger age groups in order for them to be placed on the correct team.
At the tryouts players are evaluated by several Phoenix coaches. Once a player is on a team ONGOING evaluations will be made by their coaches and the club head coach, followed later with a parent/player/coach interview.
At the development level we aim to keep all the players in the system but need to match up teams equally in order to adhere to the WYSA guidelines. Once players reach premier it may be that some players will be released, whilst we regret this we are, after all, a Premier soccer club and cannot always accommodate everyone.

Long Term Player Development (LTPD)
Starting in 2012 players under 9 years of age registering with their community club, district club (Phoenix) under the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association and Manitoba Soccer Association jurisdiction will be introduced to the Canadian Soccer Association’s “Long term Player Development” program. For more information go to this link. http://www.manitobasoccer.ca/documents/WYSAnews_spr11_webfinal_000.pdf

WYSA playing levels
New for 2012 – We now start players in the Phoenix system at U9 with the LTPD
The WYSA playing levels are;
U10/U11/U12 Developmental league
U13 to U18 Premier and Premier Development
At Developmental we try to balance teams equally, whilst at Premier and Premier Development we split players into their appropriate skill level. We can then work with the players at different levels in order to develop them to their full potential.

Team size
U9 Start with the LTPD program.
U10 / U12 – 9v9 outdoor 3/4 field-14 players max
U13 to U18 – 11v11 outdoor full field-18 players max
U10 & 12 – 7v7 indoor fields-14 players max
U13 to 18 – 6v6 indoor fields 18 players max

Playing time guidelines
We adhere to the WYSA 50% playing time policy wherever possible, however a coach is well within his rights to cut playing time for any player that misses practice, are disruptive, show a lack of respect for coaches or team mates, and are in the opinion of the coach, not fit to participate due to injury or illness. I would stress to all parents the need to be honest and if your son or daughter is not 100% fit do not put a coach in a position where he/she has to make that decision.

Commitment
Phoenix is for the more dedicated soccer player, if your child can not make most of the practices and will miss games because of other activities, this is probably not the right place for you. Other sports are encouraged as there is a cross over in skills and movement patterns from one to the other. However if your child makes a Premier team we do expect them to place soccer as their first sport because their spot could be taken by a player with the required dedication and desire.

Coaching Philosophy
Our philosophy is that we coach the individual, then the team. What we mean by that is that we work on the players individual skills first, and then fit them into the team concept. Winning at the younger age groups is not our top priority as the overall performance is heralded before the result, however we do believe that success is a by-product of doing things the right way. All of our coaches work to a long term player development plan, with stated targets for each season. We also work on the players Agility, Balance and Running Mechanics, (We have qualified professionals working with our coaches on these aspects of training) which don’t just effect soccer but are useful in everyday life. Our coaches are encouraged to attend several club clinics a year along with the Coaching Symposium in Manitoba and the USA as we feel the game is constantly evolving and our coaches have to grow with it.

Coaching Opportunities
We are always looking to improve our staff and anyone interested needs to contact the Phoenix Head Coach. Prospective coaches are asked to put on a practical demonstration then a short interview to assess where they best fit in our system. Phoenix will reimburse all costs related to certification and background checks.

Codes of Conduct
We have codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents. These will either be handed out at the parents meeting or emailed shortly after by the team manager. Because we are all Phoenix representatives, this includes any coach, player or parent, it is expected that we conduct ourselves in a responsible and appropriate manner at all time. Anyone that infringes on these quite reasonable expectations, or because of their actions faces disciplinary sanctions by a league or association, lets the whole club down, so they will face consequences by Phoenix also, which in could mean that they are asked not to attend games for a specified period of time
